Letter to the editor: AI robbing us of our future?
Can’t say why, I’m naturally vulgar, but the Ten Commandments remind me of the Dewey Decimal system. The connection may be in processes of listing and labeling. In one case, sin, and the other, books at the library. Among the Big Ten, the one that’s up my craw now is “Thou shalt not make graven images.”
It may have pertained to pornography. Suppose, like now, folks objected to it, hence the commandment. Or there were problems like counterfeiting, forgery or the use of vicious propaganda? Or slander, libel or common dirty fibs? People would be sensible in identifying the behavior and warning the public of it. A person might say don’t be deceived or manipulated by a graven image, such as all the darn things, 24/7, on the internet.
It’s a broad generalization to say artificial intelligence, or AI, could be graven images. Folks were able to fib, verbally, from the origin of language, and to libel as fast as print media was invented. Porno pics came comically soon after the invention of cameras.
Technology advances industry, medicine, all good things, and has produced artificial intelligence that appears to pose a threat to humankind. The deception and manipulation could be the last thing the planet sees. God may have been onto something. Media manipulation may be robbing us all of the future.
