I grew up in Churchill and still have family and friends living there and family members who have passed on are buried near Churchill. I lived right next door to the George Westinghouse Research Park at two different residences and knew that green space nurtured our community’s air and peaceful way of life.
I have grave concerns about building a huge distribution center on that gorgeous treasure of land (“Churchill residents protest potential Amazon development,” July 6, TribLIVE). Residents will be exposed to excessive traffic, heavy machinery and pollution.
Amazon and its helpers could forever degrade the face of Churchill into their hub. This business opportunity will affect Churchill’s everyday pristine, healthy environment, jam-pack Churchill’s roads with 18-wheel trucks they were never built for and lead this beautiful residential community into ruin.
But there will be money! Local officials should not decide on Amazon based on how much money the borough will make. Money will not protect this way of life or the environment.
How are measures to protect the land being addressed by officials? Is this distribution center serving only a corporation, not the community and its members?
How may the voices of the community be heard?
