Letter to the editor: Another common-sense plan by DeSantis
It was refreshing to read an honest news article, the Tampa Bay Times’ “Florida bill would end diversity programs, ban majors, shift power at universities” (Feb. 24, TribLIVE). The article provided facts without the biased hyperbole that is often used by national media outlets like the Associated Press.
As usual, any common-sense changes will make the “brainwashed woke” go apoplectic similar to what occurred when the Florida Parental Rights in Education Act (which was falsely and stupidly dubbed the “Don’t Say Gay” bill) was passed and signed by Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis.
Higher education is supposed to be about the exploration of new ideas. All students should be free to present their questions, ideas and opinions in class in an appropriate manner, and self-educate on topics that interest them. However, that does not mean universities should be intimidated into force-feeding all students far-left-wing ideologies disguised as mandatory curriculum.
DeSantis reminds me in some ways of Donald Trump without the ego. He is sincere and straightforward in his beliefs and not afraid to take on left-wing establishments, which is why Democrats loathe and fear him and why the mainstream media will attack him every chance it gets.
DeSantis and Nikki Haley would make an excellent team as presidential and vice-presidential candidates. Unlike Joe Biden and Kamala Harris, both have experience and excellent records governing at the state level, and Haley has international experience as former U.S. ambassador to the United Nations.
