I once believed the Jewish community worried needlessly about people forgetting the horrors of the Holocaust. But it is now becoming apparent that most Americans do not remember or even know about the horrors of the German Gestapo, which tracked down and arrested any German citizen who did not follow government guidelines.

We already have news reports of American citizens being arrested and threatened with jail for gathering outside. You reported the governor in New York already is planning for a “tracing army” of 4,000 to 5,000 trackers (“Pennsylvania to hire civilians to ramp up coronavirus contact tracing,” May 6, TribLIVE). Gov. Tom Wolf has yet to release the size of the army he plans to create.

I have a new respect and appreciation for the Jewish organizations that remind us to stay on guard.
