I’m concerned about the Black and low-income residents who will be negatively affected by the New Kensington-Arnold School District’s plan to send our kids back to school full time with the option for remote learning (“New Kensington-Arnold School District reopening plan presented,” July 15, TribLIVE).

Low-income district residents may not have access to health care or child care. Some studies have shown that Blacks are five times more likely to contract covid-19, and for Black families who can’t afford child care, grandparents often care for children.

I believe the decision-makers are too far removed from the community they represent. The district should use remote learning for the first nine weeks until its leaders better understand the dynamics of the district they represent.
