Letter to the editor: Banning chocolate milk hurts farmers
Regarding the article “Federal rule could remove chocolate milk option in some Pa. schools” (May 25, TribLIVE): Here we go again. Under President Obama, the Department of Agriculture did the same thing, banning chocolate milk in schools. What happened? The price of milk went down. Then lots of farmers could not make a living and went out of business.
If there are no businesses, you can’t tax them; someone else will need to pick up that tab. But who’s going to grow the food for us?
Did milk cost ever really recover from Obama’s time? I think not. Is that what President Biden wants to do again? Is it because most dairy farmers (and most farmers) are Republicans?
When I was in school over 60 years ago, almost every kid in my class in school got chocolate milk (me included). Were we overweight then? I don’t think so.
Do we really want the government telling us what to do here? How much chocolate milk will kids be drinking per day? One half pint (1 cup = 8 ounces) — is that really a lot of milk for a growing kid? What are these kids eating at home? Maybe we should start there.
If you keep the cost of food down, will it help the Democrats get reelected?
