Letter to the editor: Believers know that God hates abortion

Tribune-Review

I felt I had to reply to the letter “Abortion and the Bible” (June 16, TribLive). The problem with the writer is that he uses a tactic called “comparing apples to oranges.”

When using a Scripture, one must use it in the correct context as it was written. Using it properly is known as exegesis, which the writer did not do. What he did is called eisegesis. That is, false interpretation and misusage of Scriptures to support a misaligned argument.

Hosea was prophesying what the Assyrian army would do if and when it invaded the northern nation of Israel because they rejected God. In Numbers, God told Moses to exact His revenge on Midian, a constant threat. Deuteronomy 28: God gave curses of disobedience and what might happen if they disobeyed him, “a nation of fierce countenance” would besiege them and some things might happen. Deuteronomy 32: God was punishing Israel because they were a “perverse generation” and “outside the sword shall bereave and inside terror” for “the nursling with the man of gray hair.”

Numbers 5 states nothing about abortion/miscarriage. Only if unfaithful, her “abdomen would swell and her thigh would waste away.” If she was faithful, “she will then be free and conceive children.” (Scriptures are from the NASB, the translation closest to the original languages.)

It is hypocritical of the writer to state that we should not use Scripture to support our views, but it is OK for him to do so.

Anyone with an intimate relationship with God knows he hates abortion, and no misuse of Scriptures can change that.
