Regarding the letter “The real Christmas story” (Dec. 3, TribLive): First, I would agree that what we do not know in any narrative can be satisfied with tradition, adopted speculation and human interpretation. This, however, ignores valid historical truth.
My belief is that the Christmas story is best told by the account given in scripture, the Bible. When recounting God’s interaction with mankind, his holy word speaks best.
The writer used used the term “they” three times and I was uncertain who he was referring to. Was it historians, religious leaders or authority figures? Also the use of the world “cult” on three occasions is a questionable description of what Christ came to establish. He desired relationships rather than religion.
The writer also mentions that some religious “scholars” feel that Jesus would never agree to admit pagans (gentiles) into “his newly formed cult.” This contradicts his mission to be the savior of the whole world and the blessing to every nation and people.
Finally, the author states his opinion that the journey to, and the birth of Christ, in Bethlehem was a “fabrication” and a “fable.” Also, he believes the virgin birth to be a “myth.” He states that Jesus was born in Nazareth, the hometown of his “biological” parents. Scripture clearly disproves all of these “opinions.”
Yes, there really is a true Christmas story. It can only be found in God’s living word.
