Letter to the editor: Better speed limit enforcement would make Cedar Street exit safer

Tribune-Review

Route 30 near Cedar Street has long been a concern for motorists and local residents alike (“Cedar Street exit improvements planned to boost safety on Route 30 in Hempfield,” May 22, TribLive). While the posted speed limit stands at 55 mph, many drivers consistently exceed this limit, traveling at 65 mph to 70 mph — or higher. This raises several safety concerns, as excessive speeds can lead to increased accident risks and challenges for law enforcement officials working to maintain order.

Reducing speeding is not just about compliance — it’s about ensuring safer conditions for all road users. Lower speeds can lead to fewer accidents and decreased severity of collisions for those exiting or entering the westbound side of Route 30. With proactive solutions, this section of Route 30 can become a safer and more manageable roadway for all.

Stronger enforcement could make a significant difference. If motorists are speeding, aren’t properly yielding or are making unsafe lane changes near Cedar Street, it poses a great risk to motorists merging onto route 30 as well as residents who live at the exit.

State police could explore targeted enforcement initiatives, perhaps focusing on peak traffic times when violations tend to occur most frequently. This could accompany the efforts of PennDOT to improve road signage and roadway surfaces.
