November being the month to honor veterans, it’s a good time to remember the sacrifices made by so many to preserve the rights and freedoms we enjoy as Americans.

But how to honor these courageous people? Having parades, raising flags, holding solemn ceremonies? Sure, but perhaps the best way is to work to maintain and preserve those things they fought for. National security, and the Constitution and all the rights it provides.

To those brave soldiers on the front lines who fought in horrendous battles, lost lives or were gravely wounded, we owe you. To those who supported these heroes behind the scenes — the families, suppliers, builders, transporters, medical staffs, etc. — we owe you.

Since the end of World War II, you not only battled a determined enemy, but you fought against a long line of incompetent politicians at home — leadership whose constant interference hamstrung your ability to win the decisive victories you would have attained if allowed.

From the idiotic rules of engagement and meddling politicians in Vietnam to the unnecessary invasion of Iraq and the bumbling withdrawal of Afghanistan, you have always been fighting two enemies, on the battlefields and in Washington.

Somewhere along the line, our politicians lost the desire to allow you to fight like you want, win like you would and perhaps even avoid future conflicts, like we all prefer. Sadly, we must recognize that second enemy. Those with their “thumb on the scale” operating in full view. Perhaps there should be a medal for that battle?
