The group “Moms for Liberty” is anything but. This organization has been judged a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center. They are waging a full-fledged war against students’ First Amendment rights to access books based on race, gender identity, ethnicity and religion. They are pushing to rewrite the history of slavery in this country because the true facts make them “uncomfortable.”

Discussions of the facts are uncomfortable. Slavery was not “good” or “beneficial” for slaves. Immigrants — Italians, Eastern Europeans, Irish, Chinese and Mexicans, as well as Native Americans — were exploited by those in power, then discarded when they no longer served what those in authority deemed a “purpose.” This is still going on to this day, which is why we still do not have a living wage law in this county. We need school curriculums that will teach real history, not watered-down, feel-good fairy tales of what people would like the “good old days” to have been.

Currently, this group is trying to hold the Hempfield Area School Board hostage in its attempt to ban books from its school libraries. This is this first step to a Nazi agenda to take away our freedom of speech.
