Letter to the editor: Beware of empty middle-class tax cut promises

Thirty-two years ago, Bill Clinton ran for president on a promise of a middle-class tax cut. As a self-employed person, I was paying a lot in taxes, so I voted for Clinton. A few months into his first term, Clinton basically said, “I have tried the hardest I can but I just can’t come up with a middle-class tax cut.” Within the year, I became a registered Republican.

I’m pretty sure any voter today between the ages of 50 and 18 is not aware of Clinton’s empty promise, as many weren’t even alive then. So when Kamala Harris spoke of a “middle-class tax cut,” I remembered Clinton.

History is important. I’ll be 72 in a few weeks. The Democrats for the last 40 years, if not longer, have been saying Republicans will cut Social Security and Medicare, and Republicans haven’t cut it. Voter beware. Beware of empty promises.
