Letter to the editor: Black lives matter, all lives matter
Thanks for bring back Walter Williams’ column to your print edition. In my opinion, he is the best columnist to appear in the paper. Williams acknowledges that Black people need to take more responsibility for Black problems.
I am an 80-year-old white male, and I believe that Black lives matter — indeed all lives, including unborn lives, matter. T.H. Breen, in his book “The Will of the People,” about the revolutionary birth of America, shows how divided America was while fighting, and afterward in trying to restore peace between the two factions, Whigs and Tories. The revolutionary people complained about being slaves to Britain, and yet did not extend that thought to the slaves they had purchased. Maybe because slavery of Blacks was widely practiced and was the accepted norm? I see many parallels between these writings and the Black Lives Matter movement. Many whites are inconsiderate and biased in their words and actions, and should face judgment. But who thinks this only applies to whites?
Pat Buchanan’s column “Joe Biden’s basement strategy — just say nothing” (June 29, TribLIVE) is a good read, and encourages thoughtfulness before acting and demanding
In news reports, I frequently see more white protesters than Black ones, and from what I see, most of those breaking and stealing other people’s property are Black. Why is so little media attention paid to that? The news reporters don’t come out and say so, but just look at the published photographs.
All of us need to look in the mirror before casting aspersions.
