I want to thank all the spectators who showed up to support our fallen soldiers on Memorial Day at the Lower Burrell parade. This was the largest crowd the VFW Auxiliary has seen in many years. It brought great joy to our veterans and their family members to see the community honoring and remembering our fallen heroes.

We were saddened, however, by the Burrell High School marching band’s lack of participation in the parade. While they have supported our veterans in previous years, this year the school district made the decision not to show their support. At a time when we need to show respect to our fallen and living veterans, this was such a disappointment. We need to stand behind them for the many freedoms they have fought so hard to maintain.

The students missed out on a great learning opportunity, that our freedom is not free. It is at the expense of soldiers’ lives. This was not just a parade; this was to honor these fallen soldiers.
