Election season brings back memories that fill me with dread, when strangers knocked on my door. In 1969, my mother and I faced the knock every military family fears — two casualty officers, there to tell us my father had been killed in combat.
My dad was drafted and understood what lay ahead. It wasn’t about politics for him; it was about bringing as many of his fellow soldiers home alive as possible.
In battle, he carried a list of the men in his unit who shared his blood type. That list didn’t include their race, their home state, their political affiliation or whether they were drafted or enlisted. Their lives depended on each other when the worst happened.
When I look at the names on my ballot, I ask myself: Is this person truly capable of service? Will they put others first? Will they make sacrifices when it matters?
I could never vote for someone who didn’t serve in the military and disrespected those who did. That’s why I’m voting for Kamala Harris and Tim Walz.
