Letter to the editor: Capitalism is a sin
Regarding Dr. Joel Last’s letter “Socialism & religious values” (Nov. 9, TribLIVE): You associate capitalism with God, but I believe that capitalism can truly be evil.
Yes, there are laws involving capitalism that prevent committing the sins and crimes listed in the Ten Commandments, but capitalism in itself is a sin. To quote the Commandments: “ … You shall have no other gods before me.”
Capitalism supports the idolization of money and power. As a society we crave wealth and lust after materialistic things. All of these actions and feelings are the very things God tells his followers not to do.
This country is built upon freedom. The separation of church and state was created so that individual religious beliefs could not be the purpose for making laws. Posting the Ten Commandments everywhere with the sole purpose of reminding our community about how godly you think capitalism is and how it is much better than socialism is without a doubt a violation of the separation.
I would like for you to reconsider your thoughts on this topic and to understand why it is important that the Ten Commandments stay out of our schools and government. I believe that we have a wonderfully diverse community and we should respect the beliefs that each of our fellow citizens have.
