Letter to the editor: Casey needs economics lesson
Regarding the article “Sen. Casey questions Wendy’s intent with dynamic pricing plans” (Feb. 29, TribLive): Evidently Sen. Bob Casey has never read or watched anything by some guy named Milton Friedman. Didn’t President Biden get mocked for this a couple of weeks ago? If it wasn’t for the inflation that they helped cause, shrinkflation wouldn’t be happening, but he doesn’t want you to think about that. It’s all the greedy corporations’ fault. Were these corporations any less greedy four years ago?
Everything costs 20% more than it did when Biden got sworn in. Casey doesn’t bother to mention that small detail. They keep telling me prices are coming down, when in reality the prices seem to be going up twice as fast as they increased when Trump was in the White House. This is called progress?
What makes the senator believe price-control legislation will fix anything? Casey is old enough to remember Richard Nixon’s wage and price controls way back in 1971. Apparently, he also is old enough to have forgotten about them as well. Didn’t Hugo Chavez push similar legislation in Venezuela 20-plus years ago? How did that work out? Price controls have never worked anywhere they have ever been instituted, but he won’t mention that.
It seems the senator needs to add some reading material to his list of things to do, starting with a history class or two. May I also suggest the aforementioned Friedman, maybe some Friedrich Hayek. Or he could curl up by the fireplace with some Adam Smith and John Locke.
