Letter to the editor: Cellphone law only works if we're all visible

Tribune-Review

June 5 was the first day the Paul Miller’s Law went into effect to alleviate the usage in most capacities of cellphones or internet service while driving. While this is a much needed law to prevent accidents, I do feel there is a major hurdle that will prevent the likelihood that we will all be in observance. Unfortunately, with the legalization of darker tinted windows in Pennsylvania, only those of us more visible will pay the price.

I believe in this law; however, I find it most frustrating to draw a conclusion at intersections when you cannot see or anticipate the reaction of a driver due to darkened windows. How will we see their cellphone interactions?

I have in the past questioned how you identify a person who may have been involved in an incident when you literally cannot see inside a car while driving. In my opinion, this has become more of a status symbol, as Pennsylvania is not the Sunshine State where we need total black-out sun protection.

My effort in writing this is not to conclude that those drivers will violate or take advantage of the Miller law; however, being seen means being safe for everybody’s sake. Let’s be safe and visible, not dark and assuming. These actions save lives.
