I am writing as a concerned and engaged resident to urge West Leechburg leaders to reconsider the overly restrictive regulations on keeping backyard chickens in the borough.

Backyard chickens are a source of fresh, healthy eggs, and they also offer families an opportunity to become more self-sufficient, teach children responsibility and reduce household food waste. In fact, many towns across the country have embraced responsible chicken keeping without incident, recognizing that with sensible guidelines, chickens are no more disruptive than other common pets.

Currently, the limitations in place make it nearly impossible for average residents to benefit from this practice. These restrictions disproportionately affect those with smaller properties, effectively turning sustainability into a privilege rather than an accessible option for all.

I respectfully ask that our local officials revisit the current ordinance with an open mind. Thoughtful reform could allow more families to responsibly keep hens while maintaining the peace, cleanliness and neighborly values we all share.

Let’s bring our borough into step with modern, sustainable living — without compromising community standards.
