Letter to the editor: Churches need to stand up

Tribune-Review

With the exception of a few prophetic voices like Episcopal Bishop Mariann Budde of Washington, D.C., and Catholic Bishop Mark Seitz of El Paso, Texas, most Christian leaders have remained cowardly silent in confronting the national environment of hatred, fear, discrimination and scapegoating promulgated by the current administration in Washington.

A church that puts institutional preservation above the Gospel is a church that is not worth preserving.

A church that turns its back on the poor, including immigrants and refugees, is a church toward which we should turn our backs.

A church that refuses to confront hate speech, discriminatory policies and white supremacy is a church that we should refuse.

A church that preaches fear of our neighbors and fear of God is a church that we should fear.

It is high time for every bishop, elder, pastor, reverend, priest and deacon to be as visible in the streets as ICE agents, the National Guard and the Marines.
