Letter to the editor: Clearances protect children

I must take issue with letter-writer who objected to the requirement for clearances in order to volunteer with a church (“What would Jesus think of all these clearances?,” July 14, TribLive). It is not only the Catholic Church that has this requirement, but any organization where children are served — churches, schools, Scouts, etc. It is not a proof of “holiness” but only proof that you do not have a criminal record.

The reason it is required for all activities is that if a person volunteers with a church, in any capacity, there is an implication that they are “safe.” And it might be possible for an unsavory person to get close to a child because of that perception. So even for clerical and other nonreligious activities, clearances are required. It takes a little time and must be renewed every five years, but if it protects children, I’m all in.
