Letter to the editor: Climate change affects economy, too

Tribune-Review

Climate change is not just an environmental issue; it’s a significant economic challenge that is already affecting inflation rates and costs in America. Here are key points highlighting this impact:

• The increasing frequency and intensity of extreme weather events, such as hurricanes, floods and wildfires, have significant economic repercussions. These events disrupt supply chains, damage infrastructure and lead to increased costs for businesses and consumers alike.

• Climate change disrupts agricultural productivity through droughts, heat waves and shifting growing seasons. This leads to crop failures, reduced yields and higher food prices, contributing to inflationary pressures.

• The energy sector is vulnerable to climate-related risks, including disruptions in oil and gas production due to extreme weather events. This volatility can lead to fluctuating energy prices, affecting consumer spending and overall inflation rates.

• The escalating costs of climate-related disasters, such as property damage and insurance payouts, add to the financial burden on individuals, businesses and government agencies.

• Climate change exposes vulnerabilities in infrastructure, such as coastal areas facing sea-level rise and inland regions experiencing increased flooding. Addressing these vulnerabilities requires substantial investments, adding to economic costs.

• Climate change contributes to health-related costs, including heat-related illnesses, air pollution-related diseases and mental health impacts from climate-induced disasters.

Addressing climate change is not just a moral imperative but an economic necessity. Investing in climate resilience, transitioning to renewable energy and implementing policies that mitigate climate risks are essential steps to safeguarding our economy and reducing long-term costs.
