It is only appropriate that citizens give Sen. Pat Toomey credit for his vote to void the president’s “state of emergency” declaration. Whether one approves of Donald Trump or not, that declaration gives him the ability to override the constitutional power of Congress to set spending. This erodes the basis of the checks and balances inherent in our government, and paves the way for a runaway executive.

Anyone who says “So what?” should remember that Trump won’t always be president. Toomey’s vote to defy his party to protect the Constitution is commendable. Let us hope the rest of the GOP comes around to his view, and soon. The long-term health of the republic is at stake.
