Subsidized housing conditions in Westmoreland County are deplorable. Deficiencies include problems with water and mold, bug and rodent infestations, worn-out appliances, inefficient heating and cooling, and waste removal . This housing is disproportionately used by working families, veterans and seniors on limited incomes. Even though these vulnerable populations have been economically devastated by the pandemic, those who complain are often harassed or threatened with eviction.

No one should be asked to accept the state of subsidized housing facilities under which these people are currently living, including senior towers in various communities and those offered by individual landlords who accept state and federal funding. Access to safe, livable housing has a significant impact on the mental health and overall well- being of our residents and is essential to a thriving community.

Now is the time to address these glaring inequities. First, the county housing authority should address complaints without intimidating tenants. Second, American Rescue Plan Act funds should be used to fix unsafe buildings. If Commissioners Sean Kertes, Gina Cerilli Thrasher and Doug Chew can support repairs to the downtown Greensburg parking garage, they can do the right thing to help the most vulnerable in our community.
