Letter to the editor: Concerns about mining in Derry
Are you aware that the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection has given permission to Rosebud Mining Co. to mine coal on 3,012.5 acres of ground in Derry Township? Rosebud is awaiting a permit to open its first deep-shaft mine (Davis Mine). However, there are critical concerns.
The area is directly adjacent to Keystone State Park, which is used by tens of thousands of Pennsylvanians each year. The first proposed mine shaft and its three wastewater ponds would be directly on the headwater of Davis Run, the major water source for Keystone Lake. The mine shaft will be less than 1,000 feet from two major pipelines carrying petroleum and natural gas. Loaded 20- to 40-ton coal trucks would use secondary dilapidated roads with 10-ton weight limits. These are but a few.
Alas, our Derry Township supervisors, local state and federal representatives, even landowners don’t seem to care. I am one man shouting into the wind, but no one hears!
