Letter to the editor: Congress must act now to continue recovery

Tribune-Review

Millions of Americans have lost their jobs due to the covid-19 pandemic. There are millions more on the front lines who are putting their lives on the line to keep the rest of us safe and healthy. Congress must act now to protect all working people, keep every community healthy and safe, and restart our economy.

While the initial recovery actions taken by Congress have helped many, much more needs to be done to protect working families and stabilize our economy. Too much has been aimed at large corporations instead of communities and families.

Congress must act to keep front-line workers safe, keep them employed and protect earned pension checks; keep state and local governments, public schools and the U.S. Postal Service solvent and working; keep America healthy — protect and expand health insurance for all workers; and keep America competitive — hire people to build infrastructure.

Without more direct help, hardworking people and their families will continue to spiral downward, and critical services and our public schools could face massive cuts.

We can’t afford to lose the health, safety, postal and public school services anchoring our recovery efforts. They all are an intricate part of this country and of society.
