Letter to the editor: Congress & war
On March 13, the Senate passed a resolution to end any U.S. involvement in the war in Yemen that has not been authorized by Congress. The bilateral support for this resolution demonstrates the recognition that Congress must reassert its authority over decisions regarding the use of the U.S. military in combat actions.
The Constitution specifies that only Congress has the authority to send the United States to war and is responsible for oversight of U.S. wars. Since the passage of two Authorizations for Use of Military Force in 2001 and 2002, three presidents have deployed our service members in 18 countries, without congressional authorization and oversight.
We urge Congress to take the next logical step and return to its constitutional obligation over decisions of war and peace by repealing these AUMFs.
