Letter to the editor: Death of common sense

When did the slow and agonizing death of common sense in America begin? Some believe it’s as recent as 2024 when 70 million people voted for an “appointed” candidate and her sidekick. Think Bugs and Daffy with a mallet.

Maybe it was when we accepted lockdowns and a “minimally” tested vaccine? Or was it when we elected a TV star and/or a foreign-born president?

Looking back further, maybe it was when we fell for the “they have weapons of mass destruction” line? I know! It had to be when we followed the “trust the science” (except biology) mantra?

Geez, how far back does this go? 911? RFK, JFK? Maybe it started when the media pushed the notion that you can’t trust your eyes or your brain for that matter? Don’t go by what you know and see, go by what we drill into your head every day.

Well, it surely has to be when facts became optional, and words began to lose their meaning (i.e., legal, illegal) or when boundaries of good behavior could be ignored?

Curious, I stood on the side of the road waiting for the next car to come by so I could ask them. When it flew past at 50 mph over the speed limit with blacked-out windows, outdated stickers and a peeled license plate, it clicked.

We are headed toward the age when touching the hot stove repeatedly is normal.
