Letter to the editor: Decency in the White House
Not all Trump supporters are moonshine-swilling hillbillies or white evangelicals who have left their consciences in the vestibule. They are joined by those who are simply satisfied with full bellies and crammed wallets. Add to their number the spineless Republican senators, who, after the president was impeached — and, yes, he was impeached — failed to convict and remove him from office. This out of fear of anticipated Trumpian retaliation and perhaps loss of a cakey job?
Most disheartening, however, for those of us who consider the presidency a domicile of dignity and a reflection of what American citizens represent at their best, is the sad fact that there are millions for whom grace, gravitas and moral decency don’t seem to matter much, if at all. These latter are satisfied with an uncouth incompetent who represents and espouses their tired and worn mantras: stop “socialistic” giveaways (meaning any assistance for the less fortunate), promote a “strong” military (as if any politician ever called for a “weak” military), down with “big” government (whatever that is) and all the other excuses used to overlook the necessary minimum moral competency we have perennially expected of a president.
I am not looking for a “saint” in the White House; nor do I expect that all presidential statements or actions meet with my prior approval. My expectation and hope is that we can elect someone who is a little less than the epitome of vulgarity and looks like the average, decent American you have as your neighbor.
