According to letter-writer Kenneth Powell, the Democrats gave me Social Security and Medicare (“Most of our benefits come from Democratic leaders,” Jan. 19, TribLIVE). I say the Democrats gave me nothing but Ponzi schemes that will soon run out of money without a rescue plan.

I paid into Social Security and Medicare for more than 50 years, because I had no choice. I am now receiving the benefits of those payments that I was promised. Who knows how long the payments will last? In retrospect, if I had been given the option of not paying into Social Security and Medicare and investing my money on my own for my retirement years, I would have probably been better off.

As to the Affordable Care Act, if Justice John Roberts hadn’t contorted the law so it would pass constitutional muster, we wouldn’t be burdened with yet another giveaway program that this country can’t afford.
