On July 13, 2024, then presidential candidate Donald Trump narrowly escaped an assassination attempt at a campaign rally in Butler. Speaker of the House Mike Johnson, a Southern Baptist, afterward stated, “God miraculously spared the president’s life. … His presidency and his life are the fruits of divine providence.”

On July 20, 1944, the sixth attempt on Adolf Hitler’s life took place when disgruntled German officers, hoping to end the war, placed a briefcase full of explosives next to der Fuhrer. Just before it exploded, an officer in attendance, unaware of the plot, moved the briefcase behind a thick table leg. The explosion blew apart the table and killed four officers. Hitler escaped with non-life-threatening injuries and thereafter declared he was immortal, protected by the hand of God.

I don’t know about you, but I think I’ll stick with what Mark Twain once said: “The truth has no defense against a fool determined to believe a lie.”
