Letter to the editor: Diocese should support schools

I’m still a practicing Catholic despite the findings of the grand jury. I’m working through it, but that’s a conversation for another time. My issue today is with the Catholic school system.

The July 26 edition of the Pittsburgh Catholic newspaper had an article describing financial hardships in the Diocese of Pittsburgh. It referenced declining enrollment in Catholic grade schools and explained that if the schools cannot operate on balanced budgets, they will face closure.

Diocesan officials say the schools are important to them, but their actions do not support that statement. In southwestern Pittsburgh, families have been forced to deal with disorganized school mergers without warning, preferential treatment toward families who donate money and a lack of accountability in many areas. When families follow the chain of command to discuss our concerns, we are often patronized or ignored.

I challenge the diocese to act like our schools are an integral part of the Catholic community. We are blessed with amazing teachers and families who give selflessly to see our children succeed. With your support, I believe many Catholic schools will continue to thrive.
