Letter to the editor: Dismayed by ‘Apologies’ letter

I was somewhat dismayed after reading Steven Crichley’s letter “Apologies for being old, white, straight, conservative, Christian male” (Nov. 12, TribLIVE). It is nothing more than a thinly veiled assault on anyone who may not share the values of the writer, especially if he or she happens to be a person of color.

I know hundreds, if not thousands, of people of color who have worked for 40 years, served their country, paid their taxes and are people of character. But if one reads this letter, he or she may not think such people ever existed.

I might remind Crichley that many if not most of the famed Tuskegee airmen were from the Pittsburgh area. Do they not count? Or are you just consumed with those who have failed along the way, especially if they are people of color?

It seems to me that many of those involved in the OxyContin scandals are not minorities. Also, your part of Pennsylvania has been a welcoming home to the KKK. Do you condone their activities? Maybe you just forgot to add them to your list of bad actors.

My rebuke could go on for pages, but I don’t believe the letter-writer is interested in history, sociology or facts. No, Mr. Crichley, you are not hated because you are old and white. Maybe you should be pitied because you are too intellectually lazy to seek out the truth.

One last note: How can you not pay tribute to Doris Miller, Colin Powell and the women of “Hidden Figures”? Just another oversight, I am sure.
