There is ongoing concern about the decline in donations of human milk in the Pittsburgh area due to the coronavirus. Being a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) nurse, I see firsthand how important these donations are to our fragile babies.

Mothers of these babies have difficulty producing the milk they so direly need. The donations of milk from healthy mothers brings optimal nutrition and lifesaving measures to these babies, as it can be protective against many short- and long-term complications.

I hope that mothers in the Pittsburgh area who may have a surplus of milk supply will get screened at the Mid-Atlantic Mother’s Milk Bank (midatlanticmilkbank.org) to see if they can help.
