Letter to the editor: Don't open doors to tyranny with your vote
Millions of people all over the world wish for what we already have. Some would die for it. Our freedoms must never be taken for granted. There are elements to our complicated system of government that define the United States as a free country.
The Constitution, the Rule of Law and the right to vote all serve to protect us and give us a voice in choosing our leaders. These three things have greater power than any political party or elected official. Without these elements all of our rights, from freedom of speech to gun rights to due process in the courts, would be in jeopardy. Whether consciously or unconsciously, all Americans live their lives confidently knowing these protections are in place.
We now have a man who I believe is threatening to rewrite the Constitution, eliminate the justice system and discontinue free elections while seeking complete immunity for himself. These are by definition the actions of a dictator. He has, in fact, used this term himself. And we can believe these threats just by looking at the company he keeps.
Sadly, he has convinced a number of us that this is better for America. Some love him, some fear him, some worship him as a savior, but he is not immortal. By voting for this man, you are opening our doors to tyranny and you must consider who might come next.
