Letter to the editor: Economic growth in Westmoreland

Tribune-Review

In reference to the article “Declining workforce amid pandemic cited as Westmoreland County’s top issue” (Jan. 19, TribLIVE): At the State of the County event hosted by the Westmoreland County Chamber of Commerce, Economic Growth Connection and Industrial Development Corporation, the Board of Commissioners provided an informative forum on important topics.

The commissioners articulated the most pressing challenges for business and the pandemic fall-out related to workforce development. Most businesses are struggling with a less-than-adequate pool of available and qualified workers, with a loss of 8,000 Westmoreland workers between 2010 and 2020. However, there are many positives, including continuous job training, retention and creation efforts.

The comprehensive Re-imagining Westmoreland plan focuses on economic, community and workforce development to build a strong economy and improve the quality life for citizens. It’s visionary and strategic, and it will help attract, develop and retain a diverse and stable workforce to sustain a healthy economy.

Grow Westmoreland, a nonprofit organization, is committed to working with local employers and trade schools to build stronger relationships. With a focus on training, scholarships and tuition reimbursements for individuals between ages 18-25, it provides information about skilled labor and agriculture careers. An outreach component offers high school students an opportunity to learn more about high demand occupations and successful career pathways.

Congratulations to the commissioners and the event sponsors for their collective efforts to work together for economic growth and progress. And thanks to Westmoreland County Community College, the Workforce Investment Board, Westmoreland County Forum for Workforce Development and PA Career Link as essential partners.
