The Electoral College is just one part of the election process that applies only to the executive branch.

Letter-writer Ron Slabe (“Electoral College is archaic,” Feb. 25, TribLIVE) makes the failed assumption that the USA is a democracy. America is a constitutional republic, and the Founding Fathers in their wisdom are what have kept the country what it is today.

The election of the House every two years, one-third of the Senate every two years and executive every four years might cause gridlock, but it also helps prevent one party from having a concentration of power. This system of checks failed under President Franklin Roosevelt in the 1930s and ’40s, which resulted in the internment of over 100,000 Americans whose only crime was their Japanese heritage. Today look at California and the effects of its one-party control.

Democracy eventually dissolves into mob rule and leads to destruction. Don’t mess with the system when it doesn’t go your way. Rather, spend that time learning the history of this great nation and why it is the best place on Earth to achieve your dreams.
