Railroads aren’t the only purveyors of pollution. Power plants bring us electricity, but they send us smog and soot, too. For anyone who breathes, this is bad news. The good news is the Environmental Protection Agency has proposed stronger power plant pollution rules.

For the last month, I have battled bronchitis and pneumonia, even though I’m a regular exerciser. On the other hand, exercising outside isn’t without health risks, given that Pittsburgh has some of the dirtiest air in the country.

The rarified power plant lobby in Washington, D.C., claims that the new pollution-cutting rule will cost a lot. Right now, smog and soot costs my lungs a lot, as well as those of my littlest neighbors, fellow oldsters and even, over time, the healthiest among us.

The new EPA rules cut smog and soot so every child and grandpa can play outside without hidden cost.
