A recent letter-writer asks, “Why do evangelicals support un-Christian Trump?” (Aug. 6, TribLive). Scripture provides his answer.

Adam couldn’t resist peer pressure. (Genesis 3:12)

Noah, the last righteous man of his time, was a drunk who slept in the nude. (Genesis 9:20-21)

Abraham, the forefather of faith, let other men walk off with his wife on two different occasions. (Genesis 12/20)

Sarah let her husband sleep with another woman and then hated her for it. (Genesis 16)

Moses, the humblest man on earth (Numbers 12), committed murder. (Exodus 2)

Samson was enmeshed with a disloyal wife and ended up taking his own life. (Judges 16)

David, “God’s anointed one,” concealed his adultery with a murder. (2 Samuel 11)

Solomon was probably the world’s first sex addict. (1 Kings)

Peter, the original “election” denier, often spoke before thinking. (The Gospels)

Paul was the prosecutor of the early followers of Christ. (Acts 8)

In Christian theology, there are redeeming qualities even in the most flawed among us.

Jesus said it best: “Remove the log in your own eye before you remove the speck in your neighbor’s.” (Matthew 7: 3-5).

Human dysfunction cannot be reconciled with our standing before God.
