I am writing to compliment Jonathan Silver on his excellent reporting and prose in the article “Forever Changed” (Jan. 22, TribLIVE) marking the anniversary of the Fern Hollow Bridge collapse. He not only filled in many of the gaps in the story that had piqued my curiosity, but he also emphasized the human impact, which I think has been unfortunately overlooked in the media. I especially appreciated the following words:

“Luciani gets upset when he feels that people — politicians, commentators, the public — seem to brush off the collapse because no one was killed. You didn’t have to die for it to be an ordeal. Luciani knows this.”

Mr. Silver, thank you for helping your readers enter into the daily impact the victims of this event continue to endure. I really resonated with your understated yet very effective call to do better in maintaining our critical infrastructure.

Thanks for your work and creativity in bringing this exceptional article to the community.
