Congratulations to Greensburg Fire Department’s Truck Company No. 2 for going solar (“Greensburg fire station could see savings with solar panels,” Aug. 18, TribLive). This is hopefully a first step for Greensburg going forward. The article anticipates generating more than enough electricity so they can sell excess to West Penn Power. A bonus for the city and its residents.

Other areas have installed solar panels over parking garages and lots. Our local schools all have large roofs and could benefit from such installations.

Could Greensburg pursue a goal of generating its own power to to become truly a “Greenburgh”?

As an additional benefit, since the sun beating down on roofs causes faster deterioration of roofing materials, and heat build-up in the buildings and surrounding areas, solar panels could perhaps extend the useful life of the roof.

And, should the schools begin offering courses related to the installation, maintenance and repairs for solar power generation, a useful trade of the future, our youth could be introduced to a career that would provide good pay.
