The writer of the letter “Biden is no visionary” (Oct. 11, TribLIVE) offers another in the endless litany of complaints that “my flag doesn’t fly for Joe Biden.” Apparently in the MAGA-verse, there is a critical shortage of original thought.
You needn’t be a Latin scholar to understand our motto, “E pluribus unum.” It’s why our nation is known as the union. We all unite to serve a common purpose, to stand tall for democracy while supporting and defending the U.S. Constitution. Old Glory honors all Americans. Every single one.
At his rallies, Donald Trump rails against Democrats as being “Marxists” and “fascists.” In truth, these two political factions are mutually exclusive. Karl Marx rests in an exclusive plot in London’s Highgate Cemetery. Benito Mussolini, the founder of fascism, does not. Likewise, Adolf Hitler and the Falangist dictator Francisco Franco missed out on spending eternity on free and hallowed ground.
Why do you think that is? Don’t bother asking Trump. He simply has no clue.
My parents served in World War II, my brother in Vietnam and my great-grandfather in World War I. Another great-grandfather fought in the Spanish-American War and Philippine Insurrection, and was an officer with the famed 10th Cavalry Regiment. None of them every returned from foreign shores and said, “I didn’t serve for Democrats.” Frankly, this never should have to be explained to the anti-Biden sunshine “patriots.”
Our flag certainly does fly for Biden, just as it flies for every citizen here in the land of the free.
