Florida State players, fans and alumni are shocked at being left out of the college football playoffs despite their 13-0 record. Travel back in time for some perspective.

On Jan. 3, 1994, Florida State defeated Nebraska, a Top 5 team, to win the Orange Bowl and finish 12-1. Meanwhile, Notre Dame beat Texas A&M, a Top 5 team, in the Cotton Bowl and finished 11-1. The polls gave the national title to Florida State with Notre Dame finishing second despite the fact that on Nov. 13, 1993, Notre Dame thumped Florida State 31-24.

Given this, one could make the case that Florida State was given a national title in the 1993 season and was merely denied a chance for a title in 2023. What goes around comes around.

Regarding Florida State’s 13-0 record this year, Auburn finished the 1993 season 11-0, and they finished fourth.
