Letter to the editor: Fly flag to honor John McCain
I am hoping other Pennsylvanians will join with me this Sunday, Aug. 25, and fly the American flag at their residence and/or place of business marking the one-year anniversary of U.S. Sen. John McCain’s death.
Considering the present state of our national discourse, I believe paying tribute to those who dedicate their life to our country can help us come together and cultivate unity.
I have introduced a resolution in the House designating Aug. 25 in Pennsylvania as a Day of State Remembrance of the courage, patriotism and citizenship exemplified by McCain. In addition to remembering the late senator and his outstanding service, Pennsylvanians will be encouraged to fly their American flags on that date in his honor.
McCain was known for working across party lines, opposing torture, defending human rights, disavowing political divisiveness and reforming campaign finance laws. Even though his many runs for president were unsuccessful, he exuded honor and dignity. He was the prototypical American; a patriotic war hero dedicated to the idea of American freedom.
Through McCain’s illustrious life we can find common ground and a path forward. He consistently worked to unite Americans and showed us how to lead the world with honor; recognizing the dignity of all people. We can now commemorate his life by treating each other with respect, honesty and recognizing basic human rights.
