I am weary of reading posts on social media about opening up businesses now because Pennsylvania is losing tax revenue and those who are unemployed due to the covid-19 virus are anxious to return to work. Also, stimulus checks are burning holes in many pockets. Hateful things are being said about Gov. Tom Wolf and how he is handling this grave situation.

There is a reason the governor is not opening nonessential businesses. He wants to stop the spread of this virus. If we do not follow the guidelines, we will never be rid of this plague.

Many Americans have no patience. People are nonchalantly “window shopping” in Lowes and Walmart; they are putting the workers and themselves in jeopardy. I have a friend who works at Walmart. Prior to management roping off nonessential items, my friend said people were wandering around with coffee cups in hand while visiting with friends in the aisles. Not social distancing was the norm.

To ease the burden of being asked to “stay home,” try reading a book, building a puzzle, taking a walk, cleaning a closet, watching a good movie, playing cards … the list is unending.

We, as a nation, are used to instant gratification. It is rammed down our throats through advertising. Buy this now … apply for a loan … you want, you get. Now, in order to survive, we need to look past our “wants” and focus on the needs of humanity as a whole.
