Every day I watch Donald Trump make fools of his MAGA supporters; then I read MAGA supporters trying to make fools of the rest of us, using lies and half-truths. The writer of the letter “Trump ridding the world of Iranian nuclear threat” (May 7, TribLive) thinks Trump’s war will stop Iran from getting nuclear weapons. He ignores that in 2018 Trump tore up the treaty everybody agreed that did just that (everyone except Trump and Benjamin Netanyahu).
Negotiated by the U.S., NATO, Russia, and China, Iran explicitly abandoned nuclear weapons with every safeguard two years of negotiations could think up. Even before that Ayatollah Khamenei (since murdered by Netanyahu) declared a fatwah against nuclear weapons as anti-Islamic.
Iran never had nuclear weapons and still does not. But Trump claims they could get one “within weeks.” His war is to force Iran to agree to the 2018 agreement he tore up. The writer thinks this is “in America’s self-interest.” A funny way to describe Trump trying to wriggle out of the mess he himself created.
The writer says Democrats claim “Military force must never be deployed in America’s self-interest, and we must first get NATO’s approval.” If Democrats are saying that, why doesn’t he quote a Democrat saying it? Or is he just making that up ?
The writer says, “I think it is certainly true that all terrorists are Islamists.” Certainly true? What on earth is he watching on the news? Violent ICE raids? Death threats against judges and election workers?
