Letter to the editor: Football is a cult

Tribune-Review

For local sports fans who have a functioning cerebral cortex, we appreciate that the only sporting event that was worth watching over the weekend of Sept. 27-28 that involved a Pittsburgh professional sports team was the Penguins game played at PPG Paints Arena Saturday. That event was truly Pittsburgh sports “greatness.”

Ice hockey involves both physical and cognitive supremacy, unlike the Steelers game played in Dublin, Ireland, the next day. Football involves absolutely zero physical skill or talent or “intellect.” But the organization and its “cult” followers (Steelers Nation) were sadly and embarrassingly focused on the game that the “women” played on the field that day.

Football is a cult, no different than the Branch Davidians, The People’s Temple and the Nazi Party. But the cult followers (every football player at any age, every coach and every fan) aren’t smart enough to realize they are members of the “cult.” How embarrassing and shameful is that?
