Letter to the editor: Fossil fuels, hate and Trump

The writer of the letter “Consequences of eliminating fossil fuels” (Sept. 25, TribLive) states that “Going green is a pipe dream that will destroy our economy.” I think the writer should watch the weather reports sometime. Every day, it seems, some new weather record is broken, the death toll climbs, the present costs rise and future costs skyrocket. But for a climate change denier, this will not destroy our economy. Because we did not spend the money to protect our climate 30 years ago, they never admit we have to spend so much more now. Pennywise and pound-foolish.

Another letter, “Hatred for Trump muddies rational thought” (Sept. 25, TribLive), attacked Democrats for spreading hate. Excuse me, but I remember the 2016 campaign when Donald Trump began spewing out hatred, contempt and lies on a level I had never seen in a political campaign in my lifetime. I can still remember the contempt he showed his fellow Republican candidates — and he has never stopped. So: if I call him an “ignoramus” or a ”liar” for saying China will pay for his tariffs (but not us), am I being hateful? And if I say I do not think he is the second coming of Jesus, is that hateful, too? As Harry Truman said, “I never give them hell. I just told the truth and they thought it was hell.”

Is claiming Democrats are guilty of “authoritarian goonery” a case of the “muddy class five rapids of emotion”? Or is that just a joke not meant to be taken seriously?
