It is stunning to me that the Allegheny County Council and chief executive are spending time considering whether it is acceptable to frack in our county parks (“Allegheny County council passes park fracking ban, Fitzgerald vows to veto,” July 6, TribLIVE).

In a sane world, where politicians and leaders from both parties actually listened to climate scientists who are screaming at us to get off of fossil fuels as quickly as possible, this would be a no-brainer. We cannot continue to burn fossil fuels and must transition as quickly as possible to renewable and clean energy — it is madness to do otherwise.

I am imploring our leaders at all levels of government to stop the stupid, greedy, short-sighted thinking and actually meet this moment — the greatest challenge we have ever faced — with the boldness and courage that it deserves. Fracking in county parks, given what we know now, is the exact opposite of that and would be a true crime against humanity and a devastating kick in the gut to our children’s futures.
