Letter to the editor: Freeport students go above and beyond to honor veterans
Freeport High School recently hosted a moving tribute to veterans who are family members of current students. The event began with a stirring rendition of the national anthem by the school chorus, directed by Tom Koharchik — himself an Iraq combat veteran, adding depth to the moment.
Elizabeth Smetak and Easton Smith conducted live Bee TV interviews, spotlighting the service and sacrifice of the honored guests. Key Club members served a warm, delicious lunch — far better than any mess hall fare — and welcomed veterans with genuine appreciation.
Principals Timothy Walters and Charles Shipman Jr. presented each veteran with a snack “go bag” and heartfelt letters from students. I received touching notes from Jacob Bender, Alyx Roscher and the Key Club, each one a reminder of the respect our youth hold for those who’ve served. The day concluded with a powerful bagpipe performance of “Amazing Grace” by Eli Magness.
On behalf of all the veterans, we are thankful and humbled by the care and recognition shown. Freeport High School once again proved it is more than a “Blue Ribbon” school — a special place above and beyond!
